The 2026 Guide to Setting Up WeChat Pay & Alipay for Foreigners.
The 2026 Guide to Setting Up WeChat Pay & Alipay for Foreigners.
Arriving in Shanghai and pulling out a physical wallet is a surefire way to look like a tourist. China is virtually a cashless society, and your daily lifeโfrom paying rent and ordering food, to riding the metro and splitting dinner billsโwill run entirely through two super-apps: Alipay and WeChat Pay.
Historically, setting these up without a Chinese bank account was a massive headache. Fortunately, as of recent updates, the process is significantly easier for newly arrived expats. Here is your definitive, step-by-step guide to getting connected in 2026.
๐ What You Need Before Starting.
Before downloading the apps, ensure you have the following items ready on your desk:
- Your Physical Passport: You will need to take photos of the bio-page for real-name authentication.
- An Active Phone Number: A Chinese phone number is highly recommended for daily life, but an overseas number will work to receive the initial SMS verification codes.
- A Bank Card: Both apps now support international Visa, Mastercard, JCB, and Discover cards. (Note: Having a local Chinese bank card is still superior for long-term stays, but a foreign card will get you surviving on day one).
๐ณ Setting Up Alipay (Recommended First Step).
Alipay is generally more forgiving for newly arrived foreigners and has a built-in translation tool that makes navigation much easier.
Download & Register
Download the global version of Alipay. Sign up using your mobile number and enter the SMS verification code.
Add a Bank Card
Tap "Me" > "Bank Cards" > "Add Card". Enter your foreign credit or debit card details. The app will guide you to verify the card via your bank's standard OTP process.
Identity Verification
Follow the prompt for "Real-Name Authentication." You will be asked to scan your passport's bio-page using your camera and complete a quick facial recognition scan.
๐ฌ Setting Up WeChat Pay.
WeChat is primarily a messaging app, but its payment ecosystem is ubiquitous. The setup process is slightly more hidden.
Activate Services
Download WeChat and register. Go to "Me" > "Services" > "Wallet". (If you don't see "Services," have a friend send you 1 RMB in a chat. Tapping it will activate the payment menu.)
Add Your Card
Inside the Wallet, tap "Cards" and "Add a Bank Card." Input your international or domestic bank card details and follow the verification prompts.
Verify Identity
Similar to Alipay, WeChat will require you to upload a photo of your passport and verify your personal information to comply with financial regulations.
Here Coliving Pro-Tips for Expats
Transaction Fees: If you use an international Visa/Mastercard on these apps, transactions under 200 RMB are free of extra charges. Transactions over 200 RMB usually incur a 3% fee. We recommend opening a Chinese bank account (ICBC, Merchants Bank) within your first month to link directly and avoid fees entirely.
Payment Limits: Foreign cards are typically capped at 6,000 RMB per single transaction and 50,000 RMB per month. You cannot use foreign cards linked to Alipay/WeChat to transfer money to other individuals (peer-to-peer); they only work for merchant payments.
